Dr Simon Campbell qualified from Birmingham University in 1994 and was subsequently offered an MD fellowship in Edinburgh undertaking research into drug therapy in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients. In 2004 he achieved an advanced endoscopy fellowship at Royal Liverpool University Hospital where he trained in complex polyp removal, colonoscopy as well as running the capsule endoscopy service. He trained both in Edinburgh and the Oxford regions specialising in IBD and luminal gastroenterology.

He was appointed to Manchester Royal Infirmary in October 2006 as a Consultant Gastroenterologist and was the IBD lead for the department as well as the research lead and embarked on colon cancer screening under the Bowel Cancer Screening programme.

In 2016, he took up a part-time NHS position as a Bowel Cancer Screening Colonoscopist at Mid-Cheshire NHS Trust and forms part of the Multi-disciplinary team there for Colorectal Cancer. Dr Campbell otherwise works predominantly privately in the North West region.

Specialist interests

Dr Campbell’s specialities focus on luminal gastroenterology encompassing all upper gastrointestinal complaints, Coeliac disease, IBS, ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease as well as diagnosis and management of Colon Cancer. He has a specialist interest in investigating iron deficiency and managing GORD as well as Barrett’s oesophagus screening with non-invasive techniques such as Endosign sponge procedures.

He is an accredited bowel cancer screening colonoscopist with a lifetime experience of in excess of 10000 colonoscopies.

Endoscopic interests include complex polyp removal, colonoscopic polyp surveillance, Barrett’s surveillance and capsule endoscopy. In 2022 he opened his own specialised clinic called ‘The Capsule Clinic’ which specialises in all relevant capsule endoscopy procedures (upper GI, small bowel and colon capsule) as well as offering Endosign sponge testing for Barrett’s oesophagus and Fibroscan liver elasticity testing. This clinic has already received award nominations for its patient centred care and innovation and is the largest private Capsule endoscopy clinic in the UK.

Dr Campbell has held previous positions as a Senior Lecturer at Manchester and Salford University (2006-16), a previous member of the IBD committee at the British Society of Gastroenterology (2012-15), scientific workshop member for European Crohn’s Colitis Organisation 2011 and a member of the Standard setting group committee member for the Royal College of Physicians (2011-14). He has also been a member of the IPC committee for the BSG and a previous editoral board member for Crohn’s and Colitis UK (CCUK).
