Cholecystectomy

If you have gallstones causing symptoms, then the gallbladder may need to be surgically removed. The operation is called a laparoscopic (keyhole) cholecystectomy. Four small incisions are made in your abdomen to allow access to remove the gallbladder. The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia so you won’t feel any pain.

With keyhole surgery you will recover faster than if you have open surgery. There is a 5% chance of needing to convert to an open operation if there are difficulties with the surgery. In this case, a six-inch incision is made below the right rib and you will need to stay in the hospital for a few days after the surgery.

You can live a normal life without your gallbladder.

What our patients say

We were very pleased to receive first class reassurance, advice, treatment, and aftercare. We would definitely recommend Dr. Campbell to anyone in need of an excellent Doctor. His secretary Sarah was also very helpful and most competent.

Today is my last day of infusion. But I know I will be back …not as a patient but a visitor. I have only positive things to say about the nurses at Healther here in infusion and also on the 4th Floor. They all called me by my name when I walked in the door.
